SAGE 2022 - Demo Sonic Momentum Final Alpha

ABOUT:
Sonic Momentum is a fan-game aimed to inject new ideas into the existing 2D Sonic franchise and create a new, fun, and interactive way to play. This demo (although short) is meant to present these base ideas to further expand upon them in the future. Currently, there is no story, multiple acts, or progression system but will be worked on in future updates. Please be patient!

READ ME:
There are a total of 8 Wisps in this demo with 4 categories:
  1. SPEED - LASER/ FRENZY
  2. FLIGHT - ROCKET/ VOID
  3. POWER - BURST/ CUBE
  4. UTILTIY - DRILL/SPIKES
Each also add an orientation when a chao is equipped, and once the chao is Level 3 you will gain the shield buff
  1. [WATER SHIELD] > HERO - ROCKET/ DRILL/ CUBE
  2. [ELECTRIC SHIELD] > NEUTRAL - LASER/ BURST/ SPIKES
  3. [FIRE SHIELD] > DARK - VOID/ FRENZY
Chao have 3 levels to them, each level is a different type of buff. At Level 3 you gain the corresponding shield buff:

LEVEL 1 BUFFS​
  1. SPEED - Increase Acceleration but harder to slow down
  2. FLIGHT - Decrease in gravity, but slower air fall
  3. POWER - Damage doubles, but harder to increase ranking
  4. UTILITY - Knockback disabled, but less invulnerability frames
LEVEL 2 BUFFS​
  1. SPEED - Slight increase to top speed
  2. FLIGHT - Slight increase in jump height
  3. POWER - Slight decrease in rank timer
  4. UTILITY - Slight Increase in ring retention when damaged
How to raise chao stats when equipped?
  1. SPEED - Maintain close to top speed.
  2. FLIGHT - Maintain air time.
  3. POWER - Defeat enemies.
  4. UTILTIY - Collect rings from environment.
How does chao affect your playstyle? You get to experience slightly different builds. Here are some examples:

Classic Sonic : Equip a FLY/FLY chao
Rush Sonic: Equip a RUN/FLY chao

I liked it a lot for being an alpha but I have a small problem, when I put the game in full screen in the main menu everything looks fine but when it comes to a level it stretches and the bottom part stays off the screen. Does anyone have a solution to that? (I would play in windowed mode but it's too small to see anything).

Ok so when Im done with the first part of the tutorial it just sends me to the title screen. I know there's another part to it and know I can't progress any farther, please help me :(

I believe it's a problem to do with Steam Proton. I get no problems on my Linux machine running it with stock Wine (which Proton is based off) so if it's possible to get that running on a Steam deck then I believe that's your solution. Steam Proton has a few file related differences from Wine which make it finicky with some non-Steam games. I don't own a Steam deck but from what I've heard, you can install the Flatpaks of apps such as Lutris or Bottles which work as frontends to Wine. I heard that Lutris and some other apps are no longer on Discover for Steam Deck so you gotta use a bit of the command line... but either way, find out how to run stock Wine on Steam Deck and see if Momentum works with that, because it sure did for me.
I have bottles installed so that's a start, I dunno what dependencies I'd need for it tho. I'll try the gaming bottle preset. Do you know how I can set momentum to boot with bottles via steam? As in if I click the momentum tile it'll launch the custom bottle for Project momentum?

I got it to work via bottles and I can play the game now. So far it's great! Controls and learning curve will take some getting used to.

2 things tho:
1) The discord link on your Twitter is coming up as invalid so I couldn't join your discord server.
2) Is it possible for a resolution selected to be added in the game options? It's just that with bottles I can't change the resolution or make the app go Fullscreen so it's got a massive border around it.

This game is really fun! clearly a lot of love and attention went into this game and I'm all for it! the dev has really outdone themselves compared to other sonic fan games.
 
hi guys i have a question, how can i maximise the game? because when i start it up it occupies less than half of the screen and i can't make it bigger ._.

well i actually dont know what youre saying, i just doubleclicked it on the file and it opened ._.
maybe its because after downloading it from here, i copy pasted it on another folder? idk

1- Alt is a button on your keybored
2- Enter is that big button that is below it arrows witch is on your keybored
3- Press both of them at the same time
4- To Exit The FullScreen mode You must do all those things again
5- it will look giltchy BUT That's fine you can close it and then re-open it again

anyway, did my advice help you?
 
Running around and doing the movement mechanics is really fun!

And that's it. Combat is janky and unnecessary, it's fun when I remember the moves and have time to use them but otherwise it's just a nuisance. Game moves WAYYYY too fast for touch damage from enemies to be a thing, and the screen crunch makes it worse, but that's an issue with pretty much every 2D Sonic so I don't blame you. Wisps AND Chao AND elemental shields is way too much, if you want to keep them that's fine, so long as those mechanics are never required to finish a stage. Also changing up the way the super peel out works really messes with muscle memory, and there doesn't seem to be a reason to have done so, since up+jump doesn't do anything.

There's absolutely something here, the framework and most of the physics are really solid, but it's another SAGE 22 demo that needs more tweaking before any more major work is done. Keep at it man, this is really close to being awesome!
 
I don't want to be rude but i think this version is worse than the one we had before (SAGE 2021). The fighting mechanics are very cool but unnecessary since the enemies die too easy, Sonic feels a little heavy, i felt a little bit of input lag and the camera is way too zoomed in.

It can be because i had high expectations for this game but im seeing that im not the only one who had these problems so...

Anyway, you're still a great game developer and i know that because i loved the version of Sonic Momentum from SAGE 2021 and i hope that you will make your game better!
