Well, he probably was another color, but there's a reason why there's a creative process in the concept phase to narrow down the design of a character, not to mention blue is a no-brainier for mascot to represent Sega. I honestly couldn't see another outcome.

Romance can work right, and even be a great catalyst for a story full of adventure and risk, if given the time and proper direction. As for romance in Sonic related games, sure, it's never going to happen, but don't let that stop you from using your own imagination.
