    Fan Game Sonic Utopia

Not only that, but the old camera system was very sensitive, so the deadzone and easing issues would be further multiplied when the camera changes direction to follow Sonic. The new camera is almost completely different. It's easier and smoother to control, and it follows Sonic in a much...

    Fan Game Sonic Utopia

Interesting ideas, CB, and some that I've thought about as well. While Lange is in charge of level design for Utopia, I could provide a few thoughts for level design in general. Regardless of whether a game is more linear or more open-ended, I think a level's overall shape, mechanics, and...

    Fan Game Sonic Utopia

Haha, insanity is part of the process. It's how I developed the zen patience. ;D My experience in game engines started in around... 2009 I think. I had been making mods for Elder Scrolls games, and I really wanted to start making my own games. Over time it became an outright obsession. In...

    Fan Game Sonic Utopia

I had one that I ended up giving to my friend. I can always borrow it again and add it, but it'll be one of the last things if I ever do get around to it. Glad to hear people are still enjoying Utopia so much though! ^_^

That's one of those tricky elements. One option is to take control of the camera, but Sonic's high-speed motion can already be really disorienting. Moving the camera in a way the player isn't expecting can compound this. It's an unpleasant experience to have to fight the camera. I think for...

Experimental Idea: My Concepts for How Sonic Should Move/Control and Level Design

Yeah, 2D games would do well to pan forward a little bit. That said though, I think the frame rate difference between the JP/EU and American versions of the classics does make a big difference. Mania seems to run at the JP/EU speed, and I feel a lot more in control as a result. In addition...

Experimental Idea: My Concepts for How Sonic Should Move/Control and Level Design

I could definitely see the value in a "steering" control style, but it seems like it would feel terribly clunky for normal motion or manually switching. What I've considered is tying it to ball form. For basic running I think a regular relative-to-camera movement direction is good. As for a...

    Classic or Modern Design?

Oh jeez, this looks so weird. This series was never meant for 3D.

    Classic or Modern Design?

When seeing them side-by-side, it's clear that the modern design is for kids with short attention spans. The classic design may not be the type of thing that's popular these days, but it has a lot more character to it. The design is made to complement a more complex and nuanced experience.

We're currently using Unity 2017 (rip my pro interface), but we're not in a position yet to fully decide on multiplayer. There are many more things to finish, and many other to plan for before we can be certain that it would fit into our schedule.

It's been a slow process this past year since most of our work has been R&D. But things are finally starting to come together~

The Perfect Music Style For Sonic?

Hm... I rather think it depends on the themes of the game itself. Consider the various Mario games. Mario 64 was a step into a new dimension, and reflected this with its energetic, larger-than-life songs. Sunshine had a fun tropical feel, so the music was largely beach-ey and nautical...

Denuvo DRM on PC Sonic Mania?

I don't think SoE has any ground to stand on in this situation.

Really digging the new forum! I think I remember seeing the old one, but I don't recall ever seeing a forum with all these cool features.

Thoughts on IDW taking over Sonic Comics?

I'm not sure how I feel because I have no idea what direction Sonic is going in just yet. But if Tyson Hesse is involved, I'm definitely interested. There are some things I'll definitely miss about the old comics. Mostly with the more recent series and their use of the Adventure/Advance art...

    Can Modern Sonic Be Saved?

One thing I think may be important to distinguish is what people mean by "Modern". I generally consider it to be Unleashed and onward, with everything before it as the Adventure era. I liked the Adventure designs pretty well, whereas the designs from Unleashed onward have this... sterile...

What's your favorite fan game/ROM hack

There are some incredible community contributions to various Blitz Sonic games, many of which were a major inspiration for me in starting the project that eventually became Utopia. I appreciate Blitz and its legacy greatly.

    Can Modern Sonic Be Saved?

Even though I tolerated the modern character design for a long time, I've never enjoyed the boost gameplay. I feel no engagement from a roller-coaster simulator. I want to be in control of the character, and have plenty of room to play with the core mechanics. My favourite part of Unleashed...

    Sonic Forces

I get the feeling the style of gameplay is heavily limited by the lack of R&D into physics. The depth of a game's play will always be limited by the depth of the core mechanics. Not to mention that it relies on nostalgia as a crutch. The story behind Infinite is a bit more interesting than I...

    Favorite version of Sonic?

Jam Sonic. He's got all the sensibility of the classics, but with a sleeker, more balanced build. I used to be alright with Modern because it vaguely resembled the Adventure games, but over time I became sick of the design. When I really looked back at the aesthetics the Saturn era had to offer...
